Pupils of Salifu-Krom primary school in the Nkwanta- South Municipality in the Volta Region are forced to sit on bare floors to study due to lack of classroom furniture.

A visit to the school revealed that the total number of furniture in the school from KG to class 3 is less than twenty (20). Meanwhile there are over sixty pupils per class.

This unfortunate situation has compelled the school authorities to allow the pupils in KG to sit on the floor while other classes have limited chairs and desks.

According to the Head Teacher of the school Mr. Yahaya Richard, he said the dire condition in the school is affecting class attendance and performance of the children. He added that the children most of the time don’t attend school because of the depilated classroom they sit in to study.

“In fact, the situation here is so appalling, we don’t have textbooks and  teaching aids, we therefore call on government, the municipal assembly, individuals, NGO’s and other agency to come to our aid. ‘We further appeal to the government to consider Salifu- Krom D/A Primary School with the feeding program to motivate the children to stay in school” he said.

Some frustrated pupils in an interview called for support from individuals, organization and the government.

On his part the Municipal Director of Education Dr Stephen Kwame Tsoursefe  appreciated  the efforts  of the teaching  staff of the school  for  their  hard  work irrespective of the challenges they  face. He however assured them that the education service with assistance from the Municipal Assembly will do their best to assist them.

He said, no child of school going age should not be deprived of that privilege and that his office will as soon as possible go to the aid of the school.
